The Listening test is the same for both Academic and General Training. It assesses how well you understand main ideas, detailed information, the speakers' opinions, purpose and attitudes, and how ideas develop.
You will listen to 4 recordings and answer 40 questions. The first two recordings cover everyday situations, while the last two focus on educational or training contexts.
Recordings 1 and 3 are conversations between two or more speakers; recordings 2 and 4 are monologues. Question types range from multiple choice and matching to sentence, summary, note, table, diagram or flow-chart completion.

All Speaking tests are conducted with a certified IELTS examiner either face-to-face or via video call, and are recorded in case they need to be reviewed.
In Part 1 the examiner asks general questions about familiar topics such as work, family, studies and hobbies. In Part 2 you receive a topic card, one minute to prepare notes, then speak on the topic for two minutes. In Part 3 you have a two-way discussion with the examiner on questions related to the Part 2 topic.
The Speaking test may take place on the same day as the other sections, or up to a week before or after.

The Academic Reading test assesses a wide range of reading skills — following an argument, recognising a writer's opinion, attitude or purpose, and understanding main ideas, details and implied meanings. Skimming, scanning and reading for detail are all tested.
It consists of 3 long texts taken from current books, journals, magazines and newspapers, on topics you might encounter at undergraduate or postgraduate level or in professional registration.
You will answer 40 questions, ranging from multiple choice and identifying information or a writer's views to matching headings, completing sentences, summaries, notes, tables and flow-charts, and short-answer questions.

The Academic Writing test consists of two tasks. The questions differ from those in the General Training Writing test.
In Task 1 you are shown a visual representation of information — a graph, table, chart or diagram — and asked to summarise, describe or explain it. Organise your response into an introduction, an overview and the main features supported by figures.
In Task 2 you are presented with a point of view, argument or problem. Topics range from the environment to immigration, culture and technology. You may be asked to agree or disagree, discuss two opposing views, weigh advantages and disadvantages, or explain a problem and offer a solution. Your response must be in essay format.
